Francisco Areal

Francisco Areal is a Professor of Economics at the Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University, joined in February 2023. Previously, he held roles as Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University (2019–2023) and Associate Professor at the University of Reading (2011–2019). His research focuses on the intersection of agriculture, environment, and economics, employing statistical/econometric methods for policy-relevant insights. Key projects include leading analyses on consumer preferences (SUS-Health project) and farmer adoption of agroforestry practices (AF Futures). He also led a China-funded project on sustainable intensification via remote sensing. His qualifications include a PhD (2013), MSc (2010), and BSc (2003).

Research interests emphasize farm sustainability indicators, social connectivity in consumer choices, and barriers to agro-forestry adoption. Notable collaborations include EU-funded SOILCARE (analyzing soil quality willingness-to-pay) and UKRI projects with Newcastle/Belfast Universities.
