Francis Cummings

Fran is a Violin Lecturer and Head of Junior Conservatoire at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He also holds teaching commitments at St Mary’s Music School and serves on the board of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland and as a trustee of the Benedetti Foundation. His career spans performance, education, and administration in classical music.

Education: He studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Royal Northern College of Music, and earned a post-graduate degree in Musicology at the University of Leeds.

Research & Performance: As a founding member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, he collaborated with leading conductors and soloists across Europe, Japan, Australia, and the USA. His work with contemporary music was highlighted through his membership in the Goldberg Ensemble. He specializes in orchestral performance and pedagogical strategies for young musicians.

Advising & Grants: Francis has held teaching roles at the University of Huddersfield, Chetham’s School of Music, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. As Director of Music for Sistema Scotland, he designed curricula and founded children’s orchestras in four Scottish cities, emphasizing accessible music education.

Labs/Teams: Active in the Goldberg Ensemble (contemporary music specialization) and Chamber Orchestra of Europe. His leadership roles include Director of Music at St Mary’s Music School and Sistema Scotland.
