Francis Bach is a Researcher at Inria, specifically at the Inria center in Paris, where he heads the Sierra project team. He works in a joint team with the École normale supérieure (ENS) and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). Bach has been working at Inria for approximately ten years as of 2016 and has received significant recognition for his work in machine learning.
His research focuses on machine learning (or statistical learning), which sits at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and statistics. Bach specializes in developing methods for the automated processing of very large digital datasets, with particular emphasis on optimizing algorithm speed while maintaining prediction accuracy in distributed computing environments.
Bach leads the Sequoia project, which addresses the challenge of creating well-formulated subproblems from large, unstructured datasets across multiple machines. His work emphasizes open source development to ensure global accessibility of algorithmic methods.

- ERC Starting Grant 2009
- Inria Young Researcher Prize 2012
Bach's research has practical applications across various fields including computer science and computer vision. He has recruited students and postdocs to work on the Sequoia project, aiming to strengthen his team with approximately seven new members over a five-year period. His laboratory environment at Inria Paris has been instrumental in supporting his ERC applications and research development.
