Francis Albarede is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Rice University and an Emeritus Professor at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon). He holds dual affiliations, combining roles in teaching and research. His career spans over five decades in geochemistry, with a focus on trace elements, radiogenic isotopes, and geochronology.
Albarede earned a Maîtrise from the University of Montpellier (1968), a Thèse 3ème Cycle from Paris 6 (1971), and a PhD from Paris 7 (1976). He has held positions at institutions including the University of Paris, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie in Nancy, and ENS Lyon. His research emphasizes planetary geochemistry, early Earth processes, and applications of stable isotopes to biology and archaeology.
Key awards include the Nemmers Prize in Earth Sciences (2018), the Goldschmidt Award (2008), and membership in the French Académie des Sciences (2022). He has authored influential textbooks like Geochemistry: An Introduction and contributed to major journals. His work bridges geochemistry with interdisciplinary fields, including environmental studies and medical research through isotope applications.
