Francesco Mazzacuva is an Associate Professor at the Department of Law, Political and International Studies, University of Parma. Born in 1985, he graduated with honors in law (2008) from the University of Bologna and earned a PhD in criminal law (2012) at the University of Parma, where he was a research fellow (2014-2016). His academic career includes international study periods at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Queen Mary University of London, and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Law in Freiburg. He practiced law (2012-2015) before serving as a criminal court judge in Modena (2016-2019), later transitioning to academia. He obtained the National Scientific Qualification for Full Professor in 2025.
- Teaching: Courses include Internet and Artificial Intelligence Law, Comparative Criminal Law, Social Services Criminal Law, and Human Rights and Criminal Justice.
- Editorial Roles: Member of the editorial boards for Italian Journal of Forensic Medicine and Health Law, Diritto di Difesa, and others.
- Leadership: Former President of the Young Penalists Section (2019-2024) at the International Association of Criminal Law.
His research focuses on criminal law theory, human rights implications in penal systems, corporate criminal liability, and proportionality in sanctions. Publications include monographs on bankruptcy criminalization and hidden punishments, alongside edited collections on environmental compliance and GDPR. His work spans comparative analyses of European and international criminal law, with an emphasis on penal guarantees and judicial interpretation trends.
He has taught extensively on corporate crisis, human rights in criminal justice, and specialized courses in journalism and social services law. Current research explores legislative reforms like Italy’s Cartabia Justice Reform and dignity in penal systems.
