معرفی
Francesco Laviano is an Associate Professor at the Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT) at the Polytechnic University of Turin, where he also serves as Deputy Director. He is a member of the PhotoNext Interdepartmental Center for Applied Photonics. His academic career spans both teaching and research activities across multiple degree programs, including Physics PhD programs (36th-40th cycles) and various engineering courses.
Dr. Laviano's research focuses on superconductivity, magnetism, and materials science with applications in nuclear fusion and sustainable energy technologies. His work encompasses advanced magnetic imaging techniques, applied superconductivity for renewable energy and fusion applications, engineering of superconductors through heavy-ion irradiation, and recycling of electronic waste for precious metal recovery. His research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 7 (Affordable and clean energy), 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and 11 (Sustainable cities and communities).
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on radiation effects in high-temperature superconductors for fusion applications, electronic waste recycling technologies, and vortex dynamics in superconducting materials. The research spans experimental and computational approaches, with significant emphasis on practical applications for sustainable energy systems and environmental protection.
Scientific Recognition:
- Superconductor Science and Technology - Highlights 2014 award from IOP Science Publishing Group
Dr. Laviano actively supervises numerous PhD students across Physics and Energy Engineering programs, with current advisees including Fabio Calzavara, Martina Casciello, and Simone Severo. His research is supported by both competitive national grants (such as SUPERNEON project on neutron damage in superconductors for fusion reactors) and commercial research contracts with industry partners focused on electronic waste recycling and fusion reactor technologies.
He leads several research laboratories at DISAT, including the Analysis of Electromagnetic Properties of Materials Laboratory, Magneto-optic Visualization Lab, Microwave Characterization and Magnetic Susceptibility Laboratory, and Superconductivity Laboratory. He is also a key member of the SM-MESH research group focused on Superconductivity and Magnetism – Material Engineering by Swift Heavy ions.
