Francesco Di Franco (born November 27, 1985) is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering specializing in Applied Physical Chemistry (Scientific Sector ICHI-01/A) at the Department of Engineering, University of Palermo, Italy. He holds this position since January 2024, having previously served as Assistant Professor (2021-2024) and Research Fellow (2017-2020) at the same institution. His academic journey includes postdoctoral research at Chimie ParisTech (2016-2017) and the University of Palermo (2014-2016).
- PhD in Chemical and Materials Engineering (Electrochemical Engineering curriculum), University of Palermo (2011-2013)
- Master Degree in Chemical Engineering with 110/110 cum laude, University of Palermo (2006-2009)
Professor Di Franco's research focuses on electrochemical surface engineering with particular emphasis on corrosion science and electrochemical processes. His work bridges fundamental electrochemistry with practical applications in biomedical, aerospace, and energy sectors. He leads the Applied Electrochemistry Lab at the University of Palermo, where his team develops innovative surface treatments for metals and alloys.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong trend toward biomedical applications of surface engineering, particularly for biodegradable implants using magnesium and zinc alloys. Simultaneously, his work continues to address aerospace material challenges through advanced corrosion protection techniques for aluminum and titanium alloys. A growing research direction involves photoelectrochemical processes for hydrogen production and biomass conversion, reflecting his expanding contribution to sustainable energy technologies.
His significant scientific contributions have been recognized through several prestigious awards:
- 2010: Division of Electrochemistry, Italian Chemical Society Award for Master thesis
- 2014: Division of Electrochemistry, Italian Chemical Society Award for PhD thesis
- 2019: International Society of Electrochemistry Travel Award for Young Electrochemistry
- 2021: Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Premio Roberto Piontelli
Professor Di Franco actively supervises graduate students across multiple engineering disciplines including Biomedical, Aerospace, and Chemical Engineering. His research is supported by numerous national and international collaborations with institutions in the UK, Japan, France, Germany, and Portugal, as well as industry partnerships with companies like Roche Diagnostics, TDK Foil Italy, and Chimica Bussi. He has contributed to significant research projects including THALASSA (PON Ricerca e Innovazione 2014-2020) focused on marine vessel technology.
His laboratory maintains active collaborations with international research groups including The University of Manchester (UK), Hokkaido University (Japan), Chimie ParisTech (France), and Universität Bremen (Germany), facilitating a global perspective on corrosion science and electrochemical engineering challenges.
