معرفی
Francesco Avallone is a Full Professor in Fluid Dynamics at the Polytechnic University of Turin since May 2023. He is affiliated with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (DIMEAS), where he conducts research in aeroacoustics and fluid mechanics. Previously, he was a Tenured Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology, where he also completed a two-year PostDoc. His academic journey began at the University of Naples Federico II, where he earned both his MSc and PhD degrees, with doctoral research focusing on non-intrusive techniques for boundary layer transition in hypersonic flows.
His research focuses on understanding noise generation mechanisms and developing noise reduction technologies, with particular expertise in:
- Airfoil self-noise
- Rotor and propeller noise
- Acoustic liners
- HVAC and fan noise
- Noise propagation in complex environments
- Wind turbine noise
His recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a strong emphasis on acoustic liners, propeller/rotor noise mechanisms, and noise reduction technologies across aerospace and industrial applications. His work consistently combines experimental and computational approaches to address fundamental challenges in fluid-acoustic interactions, particularly focusing on turbulence-ingestion noise prediction, impedance education methods, and noise source identification in various engineering contexts.
His major scientific recognition includes:
- ERC Starting Grant (2022) for studying flow acoustic interaction over acoustic liners
Professor Avallone has supervised more than 10 PhD candidates, with 6 having already obtained their PhDs. His current doctoral students include Mario Ali', Ludovic Ambrosiani, Angelo Paduano, Marco Picillo, and Francesco Bellelli. He leads significant research projects including LINING (2023-2028), funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 program, and AARC2024 (2024-2025), focusing on high-fidelity simulations of acoustic liners. He also serves as the Scientific Responsible for the Erasmus Mundus Master in Aeroacoustics (2024-2025).
His research is conducted within the Boundary Layer Flow, Separation and Control group at DIMEAS, where he applies both experimental and computational techniques to advance understanding of fluid dynamics phenomena with practical applications in aerospace engineering, automotive design, and sustainable energy systems.
