Francesca Naretto

Francesca Naretto is a Research Fellow at the Department of Computer Science, University of Pisa, actively contributing to cutting-edge research in ethical AI. She holds a Ph.D. in Data Science from the University of Pisa, where she worked under the supervision of Prof. Fosca Giannotti and Prof. Anna Monreale.

Her research focuses on the critical intersection of Data Privacy and Explainable AI, developing frameworks like EXPERT for predicting privacy risks while providing local explanations. She has also contributed HOLDA, a hierarchical federated learning approach, and conducted extensive benchmarking of XAI methods. Her work explores the synergies and tensions between different ethical values in AI systems, addressing fundamental challenges in building trustworthy AI.

Naretto's publication record shows a consistent focus on bridging theoretical frameworks with practical implementations, particularly in privacy risk assessment across various data types including mobility data, text data, and psychometric profiles. Her recent work has increasingly addressed regulatory compliance with the AI Act and practical implementation challenges in federated learning environments.

Naretto actively contributes to the academic community through leadership roles including Workshop Chair for IAIL2022, Chair for XKDD 2022 and 2023, and Chair for the International Workshop on Imagining the AI Landscape After the AI Act (both first and second editions). She has received teaching experience with Data Mining courses at the Master in Computer Science and Programming courses at the Bachelor in Computational Linguistics. Her research is supported through major European projects including EU H2020 project SoBigData++, the TAILOR project, and XAI ERC.
