Dr. Francesca Berry is an Associate Professor of History of Art at the University of Birmingham, affiliated with the Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies and the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music. She holds a BA, MA, and PhD in History of Art from University College London. Her research focuses on French art, design, and visual culture from 1850–1940, particularly the Nabis group and Edouard Vuillard, with an emphasis on domesticity and feminist methodologies. She has curated major exhibitions, including the 2018–2019 'Maman: Vuillard and Madame Vuillard' at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts. Berry has held leadership roles such as Head of the Department of Art History (2013–2016, 2017–2018) and currently serves as Head of Research for her school. She edits the Oxford Art Journal and co-edits special issues on topics like 'Nabi Intermediality.' Her teaching includes modules on Parisian modernity, domestic interiors, and Impressionism.
She has supervised numerous postgraduate students on topics intersecting feminist theory, visual culture, and art history. Berry’s recent projects include monographs on Vuillard and collaborative research on migrant women artworkers in the Parisian avant-garde. Her work bridges artistic practice, gender studies, and material culture, with publications emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to domesticity in modern art.
