Dr Frances Johnson is a Senior Lecturer in the iSchool at Manchester Metropolitan University and Co-Director of the iSchool Research Group, Digital Semantics. Her work focuses on information retrieval systems, user-centered design of search technologies, and digital libraries. She holds a PhD and MSc from the University of Manchester (and UMIST).
Her research spans AI/NLP, information behavior models, and HCI, supported by grants from bodies like the AHRC and JISC. She teaches courses including Information Organisation and Search, and has supervised numerous PhD students.
Dr Johnson is an Associate Editor of Data Technologies and Applications, a member of ASIS SIGIR and the British Computer Society, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has served as an external examiner at the University of Strathclyde, Salford, and Sheffield.
