Frances Ashcroft is a Research Professor at the University of Oxford's University Laboratory of Physiology and a Fellow of Trinity College. She holds BA, PhD, and ScD degrees from Cambridge University and is a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci). Her research focuses on ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels, their role in insulin secretion, and their implications in diabetes. She directs the Wellcome Trust-funded OXION initiative, which explores the integrative physiology of ion channels.
Her research interests center on how KATP channel structure-function relationships, metabolic regulation, and genetic mutations contribute to diabetes. Key topics include insulin release mechanisms, drug efficacy in diabetes treatment, and the interplay between cell metabolism and channel activity. Recent work explores β-cell-δ-cell communication failures in type 1 diabetes and neurological impacts of KATP mutations.
Awards include the Jacobaeus Prize (2014), the Banting Medal (2022), and international lectureships. She has authored textbooks like Ion Channels and Disease and engages in public science through lectures and media appearances.
