Fran Buntman

Fran Buntman is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Director of Graduate Studies at George Washington University (GWU), affiliated with the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. She has held this position since 2002 and specializes in prisons, punishment, law, resistance to power, and South African sociopolitical history. Her research includes work on sentencing reform, Mandela and law, and the legal consciousness of incarcerated individuals.

Education: PhD from the University of Texas at Austin (1997), with prior degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand and Brandeis University. She has taught courses on criminal justice, law, and South African political sociology, emphasizing pedagogical integration of theory and practice.
