Fra Paleo Urbano

Urbano Fra Paleo is a Full Professor of Human Geography at the University of Extremadura, Spain. He holds a Ph.D. and B.A. in Geography from the University of Santiago de Compostela, alongside a Diploma in Environmental Engineering. His career includes roles as Visiting Professor at the University for Peace (Costa Rica), Associate Professor at the University of Santiago de Compostela, and Research Associate at the University of Denver’s Environment Institute.

His research focuses on disaster risk governance, natural hazards (volcanic, floods, wildfires), and sustainability frameworks for disaster risk reduction. He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to bridge human action and natural processes, advocating for participatory governance models.

Awarded for his contributions to science education and innovation, he has received the 2009 Innovation Award and Sustainable Actions in Social Entrepreneurship Award. He actively contributes to global initiatives, including the UNDRR/ISC Hazard Definition Group and the Earth System Governance Project.

Professional affiliations include the European Science & Technology Advisory Group (UNDRR), UNECE’s Task Force on Hazardous Events, and the European Commission’s SCHEER committee. His work integrates environmental engineering, policy analysis, and community resilience strategies.
