Frédéric Darbellay is a Full Professor at the University of Geneva's Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, where he serves as Head of the Inter- and Transdisciplinarity Unit and Deputy Director of the Center for Children's Rights Studies (CIDE). His academic career spans interdisciplinary research, teaching, and leadership across multiple scientific domains.
Dr. Darbellay holds a Master of Arts in Humanities (specializing in Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, History of Art, Film History and Aesthetics) from the University of Lausanne and a Master of Advanced Studies in Linguistics and Discourse Analysis from the University of Geneva. He completed his doctoral thesis at the University of Lausanne on Inter- and Transdisciplinarity in Discourse Analysis.
His research focuses on inter- and transdisciplinarity as creative processes of knowledge production between and beyond disciplines. He examines the epistemological, methodological, and organizational dimensions of interdisciplinary work across human and social sciences, educational sciences, natural sciences, life sciences, and technical sciences. His work particularly emphasizes the intersections between these different scientific cultures.
Analysis of Darbellay's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on interdisciplinary approaches to children's rights, education, and creative processes. His work on the 'Children's Drawings of Gods' project demonstrates a multicultural and interdisciplinary methodology for studying children's representations of supernatural agents. He has also extensively explored the relationship between interdisciplinarity and creativity in educational contexts, examining how interdisciplinary approaches can transform teaching and learning in the 21st century.
Dr. Darbellay serves on several prestigious academic boards including the Scientific Advisory Board of the Td-net (Network for Transdisciplinary Research) of the Swiss Academies of Sciences, the Board of Directors of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS), and the Scientific Council of the Global Research Institute of Paris (GRIP).
As Head of the Inter- and Transdisciplinarity Unit at CIDE, Darbellay leads multiple interdisciplinary research initiatives. His most notable project is the 'Children's Drawings of Gods' international collaboration, which brings together scholars from Switzerland, Japan, Russia, Iran, Brazil, and the Netherlands to study children's representations of the divine across cultural and religious traditions. This project exemplifies his commitment to transdisciplinary research that bridges academic disciplines and cultural contexts.
