Florian Schui

Florian Schui is a Professor of History at the University of St. Gallen (HSG), Switzerland, affiliated with the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS-HSG). He holds a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge (2004), and prior academic positions at institutions such as Royal Holloway, University of London, and the National University of Ireland, Galway.

His research focuses on the interplay between economic ideas and historical realities, particularly in the fields of economic and political thought, public finance, and Enlightenment studies. Current projects include an investigation into the rise and fall of Keynesianism in the 20th century, supported by the Hamburg Institute for Social Research, and a study on historical austerity policies detailed in his book Austerity: the great failure (Yale UP, 2016). His work also spans 18th-century Prussia and European intellectual history, exemplified by Rebellious Prussians (Oxford UP, 2007).

Notable awards include the Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship (2013–2014) and the Emsley Prize for Academic Achievement (2002). He serves as a liaison lecturer for the Hans-Böckler-Foundation and has held post-doctoral fellowships from the Cambridge European Trust and the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung.

Publications include monographs on taxation debates, Enlightenment-era economic thought, and edited volumes analyzing global fiscal policies. His interdisciplinary approach bridges economic history, political philosophy, and cultural studies.
