Florian Scheuer is the UBS Foundation Professor of Economics of Institutions and Chairman of the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich. Previously, he held positions at Stanford University, Harvard University, UC Berkeley, and was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He earned his PhD in Economics from MIT in 2010.
His research focuses on public finance, taxation, inequality, public policy, and political economy. Notable contributions include studies on the policy implications of rising inequality, optimal taxation frameworks, and the taxation of superstars and superrich individuals. His work has been published in top journals like the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Review of Economic Studies.
Awarded the Hermann Heinrich Gossen Prize (2021), an ERC Starting Grant (2017), and a Swiss National Science Foundation Consolidator Grant (2023), Scheuer holds editorial roles at the Review of Economic Studies, American Economic Review, and served as Co-Editor of Theoretical Economics (2018–2022). He co-directs the NBER’s Macro Public Finance Working Group and organizes international conferences on taxation and inequality.
His research highlights the interplay between taxation, political constraints, and economic outcomes. Recent work examines wealth taxes, capital gains taxation, and signaling mechanisms in policy design.
