Prof. Dr. Florian Klaeger is Professor of English Literature at the University of Bayreuth, where he has held a professorship since 2016. Previously, he served as Acting Chair of British Studies at the University of Münster (2015-2016), Acting Professor of British Cultural Studies at Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg (2014-2015), and Academic Associate in British Studies at the University of Münster (2008-2014). His academic career spans over two decades with significant contributions to literary scholarship across multiple institutions.
Dr. Klaeger completed his studies in English Literature and History at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and National University of Ireland, Galway (1996-2002), followed by a fellowship in the DFG Research Training Group "European Representations of History" at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (2002-2005). His educational background laid the foundation for his interdisciplinary approach that bridges literary studies with historical and cultural analysis.
Dr. Klaeger's research focuses on the intricate relationship between literature, culture, and knowledge systems, with particular emphasis on British literature and culture of the early modern period, the contemporary British and Irish novel, diasporic writing, Europe in British and Irish Literature, and literary astroculture. His work demonstrates a unique synthesis of literary history, theoretical inquiry, and interdisciplinary approaches that connect the humanities with scientific and astronomical thought. His scholarship reveals how literary forms encode and transmit knowledge across historical periods, with special attention to how celestial phenomena have shaped poetic imagination from the Renaissance to the present.
Analysis of Dr. Klaeger's recent publications reveals a strong trajectory in astropoetics and cosmopoetics, examining how astronomical concepts inform literary form and meaning across historical periods. His work spans multiple eras but maintains a consistent focus on the relationship between literary representation and knowledge production. Recurring themes include the poetics of space and time, the representation of scientific knowledge in literature, and how literary forms negotiate cultural and national identities. His editorial work on volumes about literary form demonstrates his commitment to advancing theoretical frameworks for understanding textual structures.
Dr. Klaeger has led significant research projects including "Cosmopoetic Form Knowledge: Astronomy, Poetics and Ideology in England, 1500—1800" (2019-2023) and currently leads "Didactic Poetry and Poetics in England and Germany from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment" (2024-2027). He previously co-coordinated the ITN "Diasporic Constructions of Home and Belonging" (CoHaB) and co-led a project on negotiating national and European identity in British and Irish literature.
At the University of Bayreuth, Dr. Klaeger maintains office hours on Mondays from 10:00-11:00 in Building GW I, Room 1.26, and continues to contribute actively to the academic community through his teaching, research supervision, and scholarly publications.
