Florian Eidam-Weber serves as a Researcher and doctoral candidate at the Institute for the History of Pharmacy and Medicine within the Faculty of Pharmacy at Philipps University of Marburg. Since March 2021, he has conducted scientific work at the institute while pursuing his doctorate (commenced September 2021) on the ethnopharmaceutical records of Austrian Tibetologist René Nebesky-Wojkowitz (1923–1959), supervised by Prof. Dr. Tanja Pommerening and apl. Prof. Dr. Axel Helmstädter.
His academic foundation includes a Pharmacy degree from Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (2006–2011), where he passed his First State Examination (2008), Second State Examination (2011), and Third State Examination with pharmacist licensure (2012). From 2017–2021, he conducted external doctoral research at Goethe University on ethnopharmacology in European explorers' works under Prof. Dr. Robert Fürst and apl. Prof. Dr. Axel Helmstädter.
Eidam-Weber's research centers on historical ethnopharmacology with specialized focus on Tibetan medicine (Sowa Rigpa), Lepcha medicine (Róng), and botanical traditions in colonial contexts. His methodology combines archival analysis of explorers' records with cross-cultural evaluation of medicinal plant knowledge, particularly examining knowledge transmission in Himalayan regions and the scientific validity of historical remedies. This interdisciplinary approach bridges history of science, anthropology, and pharmacognosy.
His publication timeline (2012–2025) reveals consistent thematic evolution: early work on dental polyphenols (2012) transitioned to colonial ethnobotany (2018–2019), culminating in current Tibetan materia medica research. Key trends include systematic analysis of 19th–20th century ethnographers' field records, comparative studies of Himalayan medical systems, and historical validation of natural therapeutics like honey and mineral-based remedies.
His scholarly recognition includes:
- ISHP Fellowship (2021)
- Second place, poster competition at 44th International Congress for History of Pharmacy, Washington D.C. (2019)
- Travel scholarship from Hermann-Schelenz Institute (2019)
Eidam-Weber actively contributes to academic governance as Secretary of the Hermann-Schelenz Institute for Pharmacy and Cultural History. His research is supported through society fellowships and institutional affiliations, with collaborations spanning the International Society for Ethnopharmacology (ISE) and American Society for Pharmacognosy (ASP). He maintains active participation in German and international pharmacy history societies, presenting findings at biennial conferences like the DGGP Biennale.
As part of Philipps University's Institute for the History of Pharmacy and Medicine research team, he collaborates on projects documenting historical materia medica systems. His work intersects with the institute's broader mission to preserve pharmaceutical heritage while analyzing traditional knowledge through contemporary scientific frameworks, particularly in understudied Himalayan contexts.
