Florent Berthaut is an Associate Professor at the University of Lille leading the MINT team at IRCICA (Haute Borne), affiliated with the CRIStAL research center. His academic position bridges computer science and creative applications through specialized research in interactive technologies.
His primary research explores bidirectional synergies between 3D User Interfaces (3DUI) and Musical Interaction: leveraging 3DUIs for expressive musical control of complex structures and visual performance augmentation, while utilizing musical constraints to drive innovation in interaction techniques. This spans virtual reality, augmented reality, and mid-air gesture systems with emphasis on immersive artistic applications and user experience.
Berthaut has directed or co-supervised doctoral research including Esther Gruy's work on expressive VR/AR interaction devices, Vincent Reynaert's 2021 thesis on arm fatigue during mid-air gestures in virtual reality, and Guillaume Vallet's investigations into collaborative immersive artistic performances. As MINT team leader, he cultivates interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of technology and creative expression.
