Flavio Vasconcellos Comim

Flavio Vasconcellos Comim is a Full Professor and currently serves as the Dean of IQS School of Management. He is also the Head of the Department of Ethics and Christian Thought at IQS, a position he has held since 2020. His academic leadership extends to his role as Dean of the School of Management since 2023.

Dr. Comim's research focuses on the intersection of economics, ethics, and human development. His primary areas of interest include the Capability Approach, poverty and inequality studies, education and human development, and impact assessment of social projects. He leads the SEE (Sustainability, Economics, and Ethics) research group, which investigates sustainability, socioeconomic issues, ethical aspects, poverty, inequality, aporophobia, social exclusion, and environmental concerns.

His recent scholarly work demonstrates a strong focus on measuring human development, particularly among youth populations in Spain, and examining the relationship between economic policies and social outcomes. His research also explores the intersection of technology and social justice, with recent publications examining potential biases in AI systems against the poor. The publications reveal a consistent analytical approach using the Capability Approach framework to understand development challenges across different contexts.

Scientific Contributions:

• Principal investigator and researcher on multiple international projects including PoPMeD-SuSDeV (Population Medicine and Sustainable Development)
• Research on aporophobia (discrimination against the poor) in Spain and Portugal
• Studies on the Chinese development model using the Capability Approach framework

Before his current position, Dr. Comim served as a Senior Economist for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Brazil from 2008-2010 and as a consultant for various UN agencies including WHO, UNEP, FAO, and UNESCO. His international experience complements his academic work, providing practical insights into development economics and policy implementation.

Dr. Comim leads the SEE research group, which brings together scholars examining sustainability, socioeconomic conditions, and ethical considerations in development contexts. The group's work spans multiple disciplines and addresses pressing global challenges related to poverty, inequality, and social exclusion.
