Fiona Ngô is an Associate Professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on multi-racial queer history, orientalism, and the intersection of art with themes of death, disability, and diaspora. She holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Irvine.
Ngô’s work bridges academia and art, including touring as a guitarist with Alice Bag (2013–2017) and composing soundscapes for performance art and video installations. Her book Imperial Blues (2014) redefines Harlem Renaissance studies through a queer, multi-racial lens. Current projects examine Southeast Asian diaspora artists’ engagements with mortality and disability across sculpture, photography, dance, film, and poetry.
Her scholarship has influenced journalism, documentaries, and film adaptations, such as Madeline Leung Coleman’s work on Chinatown punk and a film optioned by Awkwafina.
