Fiona McCarthy is a cosmologist and astrophysicist affiliated with the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge, where she holds the position of Senior Research Associate. She also retains a joint appointment at the Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA) at the Flatiron Institute in New York City. Additionally, she is a member of the Kavli Institute for Cosmology, Cambridge (KICC).
Her education includes a PhD and Master’s degree from the Perimeter Institute/University of Waterloo in Canada, and an undergraduate degree in theoretical physics from Trinity College Dublin.
Her research focuses on data-oriented cosmology, particularly the cosmic microwave background (CMB), with an emphasis on CMB secondaries such as gravitational lensing and the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect. She develops methods to analyze CMB observations to uncover fundamental physics governing the early Universe. Her work includes contributions to public data products and computational tools.
McCarthy collaborates closely with Blake Sherwin’s research group at DAMTP and maintains an active role at the Flatiron Institute. She can be contacted via her institutional and personal email addresses listed above.
