Fiona McCarthy is a Professor at the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences, part of the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences at the University of Arizona. Her research focuses on genomics, bioinformatics, and animal biology, with a particular emphasis on poultry genetics, comparative genomics, and functional annotation of genomes.
Her work includes developing standardized gene nomenclature systems for avian species, proteomic analyses of regenerative biology in reptiles, and bioinformatics tools for agricultural genomics. She has contributed to initiatives like the FarmGTEx project and HPIDB (Host-Pathogen Interaction Database). Her recent studies explore host-pathogen interactions, tail regeneration mechanisms, and the genomic basis of domestication in chickens.
Dr. McCarthy’s lab integrates transcriptomics, proteomics, and computational biology to address challenges in agricultural productivity and animal health. Key collaborations include the Functional Annotation of Animal Genomes (FAANG) project and the i5k Workspace for non-model organisms.
While her articles span over a decade, recent trends highlight advancements in genomic resource development, functional genomics applications, and the systems biology of animal systems. She maintains active roles in curating genomic databases and advancing open-access data infrastructure for agricultural research.
