Professor Fiona Macpherson is a leading philosopher of mind and perception at the University of Glasgow, holding the title of Professor of Philosophy and serving as Director of the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience. She has held various administrative roles including Head of the Philosophy Department (2014–2017) and currently sits on the Carnegie Lecture Series Committee. Her academic affiliations extend to roles like President of the British Philosophical Association, UKRI Creative Industries Advisory Group member, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Education: MA (University of Glasgow), MLitt (University of St Andrews), PhD (University of Stirling). Visiting Fellowships at Harvard University and ANU's Centre for Consciousness. Research focuses on perceptual experience, mental imagery, and interdisciplinary studies in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience.
Major projects include the Perception Census (with Anil Seth), the Dreamachine immersive art-science collaboration, and policy work on augmented reality ethics. Awards include the 2024 World Experience Award and 2023 Lumen Prize for innovative interdisciplinary work.
Public engagement includes founding The Illusions Index, co-curating the Extreme Imagination exhibition, and appearing in media like BBC Radio and The New Yorker. She has published extensively on topics like cognitive penetration, sensory substitution, and hallucination theories, with over 50 peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes.
