Finlay Morrison

Finlay Morrison is a Professor in the School of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews, where he has held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship (2004–2012). He specializes in functional inorganic materials for electronic applications, focusing on ferroelectrics, multiferroics, and piezoelectrics. His research combines structural studies using X-ray and neutron diffraction with electrical characterization techniques.

He teaches solid-state and materials chemistry, including courses on quantum theory of solids and functional materials. He supervises PhD students Toby Fairs and Andrea Paris and coordinates undergraduate Summer Research Projects.

His research explores how composition, crystal structure, and processing influence material performance, with notable contributions to tetragonal tungsten bronzes and hybrid perovskites. Recent work includes studies on structural polytypism in perovskites and high-pressure effects on geometric ferroelectrics.

Scientific awards include the Royal Society Fellowship (2004–2012). His articles span ferroelectric phase transitions, material synthesis, and optoelectronic properties, with a focus on tunable functional materials.

He actively engages in interdisciplinary collaborations, bridging chemistry, physics, and materials engineering. His lab focuses on developing next-generation electronic materials through advanced synthesis and characterization methods.
