Fiaa Huhtala is a Doctoral Researcher in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on the memory and representation of the Bolzano Transit Camp (1944-1945), a historically significant site during the Italian Holocaust. She employs mixed-method approaches including archival research, oral histories, and ethnographic fieldwork to explore how local communities in Bolzano-Bozen engage with the camp’s legacy, trauma, and contested heritage.
Her doctoral project, tentatively titled "Echoes of War: Remembrance and Lived Memory in Bolzano-Bozen, Italy," examines the interplay between personal and collective memory, memory politics, and identity formation in the context of difficult heritage. She has conducted fieldwork at Holocaust remembrance sites such as Majdanek in Poland, analyzing how local communities interact with traumatic historical sites embedded in their urban landscapes.
Fiia’s work engages with scholars like Carla Giacomozzi and Dario Venegoni, whose research on Bolzano’s history informs her analysis. Her blog (Tutkimusblogi) serves as a reflexive space documenting her research journey, theoretical explorations, and ethical considerations in studying sensitive histories.
While her current profile does not list academic publications or awards, her research contributes to broader discussions on memory studies, post-conflict reconciliation, and the spatial dimensions of historical trauma.
