Fernandez Ortiga Manel

Manel Fernandez Ortiga is a Research Professor at the Institute of Earth Sciences Jaume Almera (CSIC, Spain), where he has worked since 1984. His research focuses on lithosphere structure, passive continental margins, numerical modeling, and geodynamic processes in the Western Mediterranean, Iberian Peninsula, and Alpine-Himalayan System.

• BSc in Physics (1983), MSc in Geophysics (1985), and PhD in Geophysics (1988) from the University of Barcelona.

His work integrates geopotential fields, thermal regimes, and mineral physics to study crustal/upper mantle dynamics, including projects on dynamic topography and plate boundary interactions. His publications emphasize lithosphere-asthenosphere coupling and tectonophysics.

He has advised 12 PhD students and coordinated major EU/NATO projects like TOPOMED and TOPOMOD. Awards include membership in the Academia Europaea. Funding includes €395,000 from Spanish agencies and €465,152 from EU-FP7.
