Professor Fergus O'Carroll is a distinguished academic and musician at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM), where he serves as Head of Woodwind, Brass & Percussion and teaches French Horn. He retired from the RTE Symphony Orchestra in 2016 after 42 years as Section Principal French Horn but remains actively involved in music performance, education, and leadership. His roles include Musical Director of the RIAM Wind Bands and Mullingar Choral Society, and he has conducted groups such as the Dublin Concert Band (National Band Champions for 7 years) and the Dublin Symphony Orchestra.
Education: Holds an MMus in Performance from CIT Cork School of Music. Professional highlights include guest conducting with prestigious orchestras (RTE NSO, Irish Sinfonia), founding the Ulysses Chamber Choir, and arranging/composing for ensembles like the RTE orchestras and Donal Lunny. He also served on the Board of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) and organized the 2007 WASBE conference in Killarney.
His work extends to music education through clinics for young musicians and administrative roles, including as RIAM’s representative to the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland’s Board.
