Professor Ferdia Gallagher is an Honorary Consultant Radiologist in the Department of Radiology at the University of Cambridge and a Research Fellow at Gonville & Caius College. He is also a CRUK Clinician Scientist Fellow at the CRUK Cambridge Research Institute. Dr. Gallagher studied medicine as an undergraduate at Cambridge and completed clinical studies at Oxford, training as a radiologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
His primary research focus is developing molecular imaging techniques for oncological radiology and translating these methods into clinical practice. Dr. Gallagher's work centers on creating new molecular biomarkers for cancer detection and methods to assess early tumor response to chemotherapy. His expertise particularly lies in hyperpolarized carbon-13 MRI, which enables non-invasive imaging of carbon metabolism - a technique he pioneered during his Cancer Research UK and Royal College of Radiologists-funded PhD at the Department of Biochemistry in Cambridge.
Analysis of his recent publications shows a strong emphasis on renal cancer imaging, prostate cancer characterization, and metabolic imaging techniques. His research consistently bridges basic science with clinical applications, particularly in developing quantitative imaging biomarkers for tumor grading, subtype differentiation, and treatment response assessment. The work spans advanced MRI techniques including sodium imaging, T2 mapping, and hyperpolarized carbon-13 MRI.
Dr. Gallagher has received significant recognition through competitive fellowships including the Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Training Fellowship and the CRUK Clinician Scientist Fellowship. His research is supported by the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre and aligns with their Advanced Cancer Imaging research program.
His work involves extensive collaboration across disciplines, with publications spanning medical imaging, oncology, computational methods, and clinical trial design. Current projects include the IBM-Renal study investigating differential biology between benign and malignant renal masses and the WIRE platform for evaluating novel treatment strategies in renal cell cancer.
