Fei Ren is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Temple University's College of Engineering, where he has been a faculty member since 2013, promoted to Associate Professor in 2019. He leads the Advanced Materials Processing (AMP) Laboratory, focusing on the development and characterization of advanced materials for energy, structural, and biomedical applications. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Michigan State University (2007) and a B.S. from Tsinghua University (2002), followed by postdoctoral and staff scientist roles at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Education:
- B.S., Materials Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, 2002
- Ph.D., Materials Science and Engineering, Michigan State University, 2007
Dr. Ren's research interests are centered on materials processing, mechanical testing, composite materials, microstructural analysis, failure analysis, additive manufacturing, and nanomaterials. His work spans both fundamental and applied studies, including thermoelectrics, electrocatalysis, radiation-resistant materials, and high-performance polymers. He teaches key undergraduate and graduate courses such as Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Materials Science for Engineers, and Power Generation and Storage Technologies, contributing significantly to engineering education.
His recent publications (2020–2023) reflect a strong focus on advanced materials with applications in energy conversion, protective composites, and nanofabrication. Key themes include thermal management (low thermal conductivity materials), electrocatalytic water splitting, ballistic protection using laminates, and additive manufacturing of metal pastes. The research integrates materials synthesis, nanostructuring, ion beam modification, and mechanical characterization, demonstrating a multidisciplinary approach to solving complex engineering challenges.
Dr. Ren actively mentors students at all levels, including Ph.D., M.S., and undergraduate researchers. His former students have pursued successful careers in academia and industry, including positions at Holtec International, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and universities in China and the U.S. He is affiliated with professional societies such as the Materials Research Society, ASM International, and TMS, and serves on the editorial committee of Advanced Materials and Processes. While no specific awards are listed, his extensive publication record and research leadership underscore his contributions to the field.
The Advanced Materials Processing (AMP) Laboratory, under Dr. Ren’s direction, fosters innovation through collaborative projects involving nanomaterial synthesis, mechanical testing, and functional material development. The group maintains strong industry and national lab connections, supporting cutting-edge research and student training in state-of-the-art materials engineering.
