Federico Martinelli-Orlando is a Researcher and PhD student at ETH Zurich's Institute for Construction Materials (IfB), part of the Professorship for Durability of Engineering Materials. He conducts research under Prof. Dr. Ueli Angst, focusing on the effects of pH and oxygen concentration on steel under cathodic protection conditions, and the interaction between coating defects as a function of distance. Prior to ETH Zurich, he worked as an R&D engineer in Italy specializing in polymer processing.
He holds a Master’s degree in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology (Politecnico di Milano, 2016), with a thesis on phase transitions in lead-free piezoelectric ceramics under Prof. Giovanni Dotelli, and a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology (Politecnico di Milano, 2014).
His research interests span corrosion mechanisms, material durability, nanomaterials characterization, and advanced materials processing techniques. He is actively involved in experimental studies on material degradation and protective coatings, contributing to interdisciplinary projects at the institute.
