Federica Guazzini is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Human and Social Sciences at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, where she teaches African History and Institutions. She coordinates the dual degree program between the Master's in International Relations and Development Cooperation (RICS) and the Master's in African Studies with Dalarna University. She is also a member of the PhD program in 'Frontiers Sciences in Sustainability, Diplomacy, and International Cooperation' and serves on the Scientific Committee for the 'Diplomacy and International Cooperation' curriculum.
Her research centers on the political and social history of sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on the Horn of Africa—particularly Eritrea and Ethiopia—across colonial and contemporary periods. She investigates themes such as colonial imperialism, border studies, nationalisms, conflicts, and migration, emphasizing primary source analysis and epistemological reflection. A more recent focus includes regional integration processes and the role of the African Union in shaping Euro-African relations.
The most recent publications reflect a strong engagement with Italian colonialism, fascist policies in Africa, wartime dynamics in Eritrea, and transnational educational mobility. Her work combines archival research with policy analysis, contributing to broader discussions on post-colonial history, border conflicts, and international cooperation.
Scientific and Institutional Roles:
- Rector's Delegate for International Mobility and the Erasmus+ Program
- Rector's Delegate for International Relations (Africa area)
- University Representative for UNIMED (Union of Mediterranean Universities)
- Member of the Scientific Council of Uni-ITALIA
- Member of the University Coordination for Development Cooperation (CUCS)
- Co-founder of the Inter-university Research Center ASAFAL (Asia, Africa, Latin America)
She advises on international academic programs and contributes to doctoral education and research governance. Her institutional leadership supports internationalization, sustainability, and development cooperation. She teaches courses including 'International Relations and Development in Africa', 'Africa and Globalization', and laboratories on empire studies and project design in international cooperation.
