Fatima A. Merchant is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology at the University of Houston’s College of Technology. She also holds appointments as Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering (Cullen College of Engineering) and in the Department of Computer Science (College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics). She serves as Department Chair of Engineering Technology and leads the Research Infrastructure Core at the NIMHD RCMI HEALTH Center for Addictions Research and Cancer Prevention.

She has led NIH-funded projects and serves on editorial boards for journals like Biomedical Engineering Online and Computers in Biology & Medicine.
Dr. Merchant actively contributes to academic governance, including roles on the University of Houston Faculty Senate, Title IX Grievance Committee, and ADVANCE Grant initiatives promoting women in STEM. She coordinates the MS in Computational Health Informatics program and oversees departmental scholarship and diversity initiatives.
Her professional service includes NIH review panels, session chair roles at international conferences, and adjunct faculty positions at The University of Texas at Austin. She maintains an active research lab focused on translating engineering solutions to biomedical challenges.
