Fatih Guvenen

Fatih Guvenen is a Professor of Economics at the University of Minnesota, where he serves as Director of the Minnesota Economics Big Data Institute (MEBDI). His research focuses on macroeconomics, labor economics, and public finance, with particular emphasis on income inequality, wealth taxation, and business cycle dynamics. Guvenen utilizes large-scale administrative data to analyze lifetime earnings patterns, labor market risks, and wealth distribution.

His investigations span income dynamics across countries through the Global Repository of Income Dynamics (GRID) project, which harmonizes administrative earnings data from 13 nations. Current work examines non-Gaussian earnings risk, innovation incentives in wealth taxation systems, and asymmetric business cycle effects on different income groups.

Guvenen develops economic models accounting for heterogeneous returns and multidimensional skill mismatch in labor markets, with recent publications exploring lifecycle earnings volatility and countercyclical income risk. He maintains research collaborations with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and National Bureau of Economic Research.
