Professor Faruk Ahmed is a faculty member at Griffith University's School of MDP - Public Health, where he holds the rank of Professor. He has extensive experience in public health nutrition, with a focus on micronutrient deficiencies, maternal and child health, and global health interventions. Ahmed has over 30 years of research experience, including supervising over 35 postgraduate students and leading numerous international projects funded by UNICEF and other agencies.
Education: PhD in Human Nutrition (University of Southampton, UK), MSc in Biochemistry (University of Dhaka), and extensive postdoctoral training in public health nutrition and biostatistics.
Research Interests: Assessing nutritional status in vulnerable populations, developing micronutrient interventions, and investigating dietary behaviors linked to chronic diseases. Key areas include iron deficiency anemia, groundwater iron impacts, and adolescent nutrition.
Grants & Collaborations: Principal investigator on grants funded by the Nestlé Foundation and Australian government initiatives. Collaborations include projects in Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. Notable projects include studies on zinc biofortification, peer-led nutrition education, and groundwater iron's role in anemia prevention.
Teaching & Leadership: Teaches courses in public health nutrition at Griffith University, including 'Nutrition through the Life Cycle' and 'International Nutrition.' Serves as HDR Convenor (non-clinical) and contributed to developing Bangladesh's national micronutrient strategies.
