Farah Akbar is the Deputy Head of the Institute for Language Education (ILE) and a Lecturer in Language Education at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport. She joined in 2015 after completing her PhD in Linguistics at the University of Essex and teaching at the University of Southampton. Her research focuses on decolonising curricula, teacher identity, assessment literacy, instructional material design, and fostering inclusive communities in higher education, alongside advocacy for race equality and diversity. She supervises PhD students in TESOL-related fields but is currently not open to new PhD supervisions.
Teaching: Courses include 'Language and the Learner,' 'TESOL Methodology,' 'Evaluation and Design of TESOL Materials,' and 'Research Methods.'
Grants and Projects: Leads the PGR-PGT Community Project and holds the PTAS and Student Experience Grant. Her work integrates community-building initiatives with pedagogical innovation.
Labs/Teams: Active within the ILE, focusing on transformative educational practices and inclusive curriculum design.
