Fanourakis Dimitrios is an Assistant Professor at the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU), specializing in Vegetable Growing. His academic background includes a Diploma in Biotechnology from the Agricultural University of Athens (2004), followed by a Master's (2007) and PhD (2011) in Plant Physiology from Wageningen University, Netherlands, supported by the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation. He teaches courses on Vegetable Growing and related topics.
His research focuses on plant physiology, postharvest quality of fruits and vegetables, and environmental stress resilience. Key interests include non-invasive phenotyping, light effects on plant morphology, water relations, and nanoparticle applications in agriculture. He explores how cultivation conditions influence plant quality and develops strategies to enhance crop resilience and shelf-life.
Dr. Fanourakis serves as an Associate Editor for Horticulturae and on the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Plant Science, reviewing for over 20 journals. He is active in the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and the Hellenic Society of Horticultural Sciences (EEEO).
His recent work emphasizes genomic approaches, machine learning for plant trait analysis, and sustainable nutrient management for endemic plants like Origanum dictamnus. He investigates molecular mechanisms underlying stress tolerance and postharvest longevity in cut flowers and edibles.
