Fangzhou Xia is an Assistant Professor in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin (Cockrell School of Engineering). He joined UT Austin in August 2024 after working as a research scientist at MIT, where he also earned his Ph.D. (2020) and M.S. (2017). He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 2015). His research focuses on mechatronics, precision instrumentation, and nanorobotics, with applications in medical devices, manufacturing automation, and education tools using digital twin and metaverse technologies. He directs the MINIMAX Lab, which develops miniaturized devices for maximized impacts in fields like nanotechnology and medical diagnostics.
Dr. Xia’s teaching emphasizes dynamic systems, mechatronics, and instrumentation, leveraging digital twin and XR technologies. His awards include the ASML Student Scholarship (2020) and the ASME DSCD Best Student Paper Award (2023). His work bridges fundamental research and practical applications, enhancing industrial machine performance and medical device innovation through advanced instrumentation.
