Fadia T. Shaya

Fadia T. Shaya is a Distinguished University Professor and tenured faculty member in the Department of Practice, Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She also holds an affiliate professorship in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Shaya directs the Informatics Core at the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research and serves as Executive Director of the Behavioral Health Research and Resource Team (BHRT). She is actively engaged in federal and state advisory roles, including membership on the Maryland Higher Education Commission Faculty Advisory Council and the Board of AcademyHealth.

Dr. Shaya’s research focuses on translating data into actionable health insights by integrating social determinants of health with advanced methodologies in human data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Her work spans pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, public health, and clinical informatics to inform clinical practice and health policy. She has developed decision models for drug formulary management and has led initiatives addressing health disparities, medication adherence, and chronic disease management.

Her recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, COPD, and cardiovascular disease, with a recurring focus on health equity, economic modeling, and patient-centered outcomes. The articles demonstrate interdisciplinary collaboration and the application of real-world evidence to optimize treatment strategies and reduce healthcare costs.

Dr. Shaya mentors pharmacy, medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students, with her mentees achieving a 100% career placement rate across government, academia, and industry. She has led curriculum development at the School of Pharmacy and teaches in PharmD, PhD, and MS programs. Her research is supported by federal, state, foundation, and commercial grants, and she has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles in top-tier journals such as The Lancet, Health Affairs, and Circulation. She has delivered over 250 national and international presentations and serves on the editorial boards of leading journals including Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy and Expert Review of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research.

Dr. Shaya leads the Maryland Cardiovascular Health (MVP) Program and co-led a major NHLBI-funded academic-community research partnership in West Baltimore. Her work emphasizes public-private partnerships and community engagement to reduce the burden of chronic diseases.
