Fabrizio Catanese is an Ordinary Member of the Academy of Europe and a Professor of Algebraic Geometry at the University of Bayreuth since 2001 (W3 since 2014). He previously held Full Professorships at the University of Pisa (1980–1997) and C4-Professorships at the University of Göttingen (1997–2001). His career includes visiting roles at prestigious institutions like ETH Zürich, Columbia University, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
- Education: Diploma in Mathematics from Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa (1972), Laurea in Mathematics from University of Pisa (1972)
Research interests span Algebraic Geometry, with a focus on moduli spaces, complex and real algebraic surfaces, group actions on varieties, and topological methods in algebraic geometry. His work bridges differential geometry, commutative algebra, and classification problems in low-dimensional algebraic geometry.
Scientific awards include an ERC Advanced Grant (2014–2019), Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei membership, multiple conferences in his honor (Bayreuth 2015, Levico Terme 2010), and the Medaglia d'oro della Società Italiana delle Scienze (1993). He has coordinated major research programs like the DFG Priority Program 'Globale Methoden in der komplexen Geometrie' and the Bayreuth node of the EEC program EAGER.
Leadership and editorial roles include directing the CIRM Trento (2005–2011), serving on the Scientific Committee of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn (1994–2006), and editing journals such as the Journal of Algebraic Geometry and EMS Lecture Note Series. His work has been cited over 4000 times on Google Scholar.
