Dr. Fabio Battista is an Assistant Professor of Italian at the University of Alabama’s Department of Modern Languages & Classics. He coordinates the Italian Language Program and serves as faculty advisor for the Italian Club.

His research focuses on early modern European culture, translation studies, and second language acquisition. He is working on a monograph Staging English Affairs in Early Modern Italy and a critical edition of mid-17th-century satirical poetry titled The Fallen Popess. As a translator, he contributes to the digital edition of Luigi Pirandello’s short stories.
His recent publications explore themes such as divine right, ragion di stato, intercultural pedagogy, and gender critiques in Renaissance drama. His 2023 bilingual edition of Federico Della Valle’s tragedy won the 2024 Lois Roth Award for Literary Translation.

Dr. Battista directs 100-200 level Italian courses and led the 2022 UA in Italy: Language and Culture study abroad program. His work bridges historical analysis, translation, and pedagogical innovation.
