Fabian Winkler

Fabian Winkler serves as an Associate Professor of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue University's Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance within the Department of Art & Design. He founded the Electronic and Time-Based Art area in 2006 and previously held a Visiting Assistant Professor position at Carnegie Mellon's School of Art from 2003 to 2006.

Winkler's research centers on electronic art, new media, and the critical intersection of nature and technology. His "Critical Gardening" series investigates how gardens express ideologies through technological interventions, addressing climate change through interdisciplinary collaboration. His work spans electronic installations, time-based media, and ecological art practices that challenge conventional nature-technology binaries.

Winkler and Dr. Shannon C. McMullen secured a National Science Foundation CreativeIT grant (2010-2012) for interdisciplinary research on climate change representations, fostering collaboration between artists, scientists, and engineers at Purdue University.

He co-founded the "Critical Gardening" initiative with McMullen, developing artworks that examine social relations through technological gardening interventions. Winkler also established Purdue's Electronic and Time-Based Art program in 2006, creating a dedicated research space for experimental media art within the Art & Design department.
