Professor Fabian Klose serves as Chair of International History and Historical Peace and Conflict Research at the University of Cologne's Department of History. His work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary humanitarian challenges through extensive research on the evolution of humanitarian norms and international law.
His research focuses on the complex historical relationship between humanitarianism and human rights across different eras, examining how concepts like humanitarian intervention, colonialism, and freedom struggles have shaped international legal frameworks. Klose explores the transformation from ius in bello (law of war) to contemporary humanitarian international law, with particular attention to European contexts and global implications.
As co-convener of the Global Humanitarianism Research Academy (GHRA), Klose fosters interdisciplinary research connecting historical perspectives with current humanitarian crises. His scholarly work includes contributions to significant publications like Michael Barnett's 2020 Cambridge University Press volume examining the relationship between humanitarianism and human rights.
Klose actively engages with contemporary humanitarian challenges, participating in events addressing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global justice and humanitarian aid. His collaboration with international law expert Claus Kreß exemplifies his commitment to interdisciplinary approaches that combine historical analysis with legal scholarship to understand the development of international humanitarian frameworks.
