Associate Professor Fatma Çapan is a faculty member at Gaziantep University, affiliated with both the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (Department of History) and the Migration Institute (Urban Studies Department). She has been with the institution since 2004, initially serving in the Rectorate's Department of Atatürk's Principles and Revolutionary History before advancing to her current roles. She holds administrative experience as Head of Department at Gaziantep University (2015, 2020).
Education:
- Doctorate: Firat University, Institute of Social Sciences, General Turkish History (2008-2013)
- Master: Gaziantep University, Institute of Social Sciences, History (2001-2004)
- Bachelor: Erciyes University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, History (Evening Education, 1997-2001)
Her research focuses extensively on Medieval History, with specialization in Byzantine political-military dynamics, Crusades, Islamic institutions, and Turkic states. She examines themes like empire diplomacy, religious transformations, and sociocultural developments across the Mediterranean and Near East from the 5th to 13th centuries.
Her publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on Byzantine-Arab relations, Seljuk history, and Crusader politics. Recent works analyze imperial strategies, medieval chronicles, and cross-cultural interactions, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement with political, military, and social history.
She has led two major EU-funded refugee integration projects:
- Supporting and Enhancing Common Humanistic Values for Refugees (2019-2022)
- Providing Learning Skills to Refugee Parents (2017-2020)
As an advisor, she mentors graduate students in Byzantine, Seljuk, and Islamic history, with 14 completed/ongoing theses. Her teaching spans bachelor’s to doctoral levels, covering courses like Byzantine History, Crusades, and Seljuk Culture.
