Research Professor F.E. “Jack” Putz is affiliated with the Forest Research Institute at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), Queensland, Australia. He holds a PhD in Ecology from Cornell University (USA) and a BS in Biology Education from the University of Wisconsin (USA). Part-time engaged in 'blue sky' research, his work bridges field biology with transdisciplinary solutions for tropical forest conservation and restoration.
His research focuses on tropical forest management, ecosystem restoration, and natural history, incorporating ecophysiology and fire ecology. Notable projects include the Sylva Carbon initiative in Gabon (2022-present) and a US Forest Service project on carbon options for tropical forestry (2021-2023).
Jack has received prestigious awards such as the NATO Fellowship (Oxford, 1985) and the Jefferson Fellowship (U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 2018). His publications extend beyond academia, including natural history essays (e.g., Finding Home in the Sandy Lands) and creative works like the novel Borneo Dammed.
He advises HDR and Honours students on local conservation and restoration projects. His work emphasizes practical solutions to forest degradation through collaborations and innovative approaches.
