Kathryn Vanya Ewart is a University Teaching Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dalhousie University, cross-appointed to the Department of Biology since 2014. Previously, she held an Adjunct position from 1998 to 2013. Her research focuses on antifreeze proteins, proteostasis, and cold adaptation in marine species, with three core projects: ice-binding mechanisms, hypothermic cell protection, and amyloid formation modeling. She is affiliated with the Protein Assembly Research Team.
Educated at Université de Moncton (BSc Honours), Memorial University of Newfoundland (PhD), and the Hospital for Sick Children (postdoctoral training), her work bridges biochemistry, molecular biology, and marine science. Publications span protein chemistry, cold adaptation, and applications of marine natural products in health research.
Her lab includes Honours student Min Lee (2025), and collaborations involve marine algae extracts and shrimp oil characterization for biomedical and metabolic studies. Research emphasizes cross-disciplinary approaches to understand universal biological processes through cold-adapted organisms.
