Evgeny Pavlov serves as Associate Professor of Russian and History and Head of the Department of Global, Cultural and Language Studies at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, concurrently holding a Visiting Professorship at MODERNITAS for 2023-2024.
He earned his doctorate in Comparative Literature from Princeton University. His research centers on Russian and European cultural and literary history from the 20th-21st centuries, specializing in autobiographical poetics and comparative analysis of figures like Walter Benjamin and Osip Mandelstam. He authored The Shock of Memory: Autobiographical Poetics of Walter Benjamin and Osip Mandelstam (2005) and edited multiple volumes on Russian literature.
Pavlov actively shapes Slavic scholarship as co-editor of the New Zealand Slavonic Journal and vice-president of the Australia and New Zealand Slavists’ Association, with recent lectures exploring temporal dynamics in Soviet-era literature and Platonov's socialist realism.
