Evgeny I Rogaev

Evgeny I Rogaev is a Professor of Psychiatry at UMass Chan Medical School, affiliated with the T.H. Chan School of Medicine and the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He holds positions in departments including Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Neuroscience, and Bioinformatics. His academic career includes roles as Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Brain Genetics at the Research Center of Mental Health (Russian Academy of Medical Sciences) since 1990 and has been with UMASS Medical School since 2002.

Education: Lomonosov Moscow State University (B.S. Biology, 1983), Russian Academy of Sciences (M.S. Biology, 1988), and Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Ph.D. Medical Genetics, 1996). His research focuses on molecular genetic mechanisms of neuropsychiatric diseases, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and depression. He explores genetic and epigenetic factors, including presenilin genes, neuroplasticity, and population genetics.

Research interests span Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis, schizophrenia genetics, and the role of retrotransposons in neurodegeneration. His work includes identifying genetic variants linked to diseases, brain functional connectivity, and evolutionary aspects of behavioral disorders. He leads studies on genetic isolates, positional cloning, and genomic approaches for identifying disease genes.

Recent articles highlight studies on chromosome conformation capture, immune longevity mechanisms, and neurophysiological hallmarks of Huntington’s disease. His work bridges genomic analysis with clinical applications, emphasizing translational research. He actively mentors postdoctoral researchers in molecular genetics and neurodegenerative diseases.

Labs/Teams: Directs the Laboratory of Molecular Brain Genetics and collaborates internationally on projects involving genomic medicine, neurodegenerative disorders, and evolutionary genetics.
