Evgenia Vella is an Assistant Professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) in the Department of International and European Economic Studies, School of Economic Sciences. She also serves as a research associate at ELIAMEP (Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy) and previously held positions as Permanent Lecturer at the University of Sheffield (2015-2020), Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at Fundació MOVE in Barcelona (2018-2020), and fellowships at the European University Institute in Florence.
Dr. Vella's primary research focuses on International Macroeconomics and Macroeconomics of Labor Markets. Her work examines fiscal policy issues including the interaction of fiscal consolidation with tax evasion and corruption, effects of fiscal austerity in monetary unions, and consequences of fiscal policy on skills mismatch. Her recent research investigates the macroeconomics of migration, particularly examining the interaction of fiscal consolidation with migration during the Greek financial crisis (2010-2015) and macroeconomic impacts of migration inflows in Germany (2006-2019). She has also co-edited a volume on understanding migration through macroeconomics.
Her publication record shows a strong focus on policy-relevant macroeconomic research, with recent articles addressing fiscal responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, migration dynamics, and technological change. Her work spans top economics journals including the European Economic Review, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, and SERIEs—Journal of the Spanish Economic Association.
